C-TECH and partners celebrate one-year anniversary of Health Education Sessions on HIV and COVID-19

C-TECH, along with partners, the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Jamaica Network of Seropositives, celebrated in April 2021 the first anniversary of providing HIV Health Education and Information Sessions to the people living with HIV (PLHIV) Community.

The webinars came about due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on key populations and the need to address the information concerns related to accessing health services and the high risk of COVID-19 complications and adverse outcomes.

Consequently, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ HIV/STI/ TB Unit and the Jamaica Network of Seropositives (JN+), C-TECH partnered together to host monthly virtual information sessions via the Zoom web platform. The sessions focused on COVID-19 and HIV and targeted PLHIV, their care and support teams.

In one year, C-TECH has made significant strides in compiling and delivering to the PLHIV community best practices and vital information on HIV services impacted by COVID-19 and possible measures to be taken throughout this challenging period. Over 15 sessions have been delivered to a growing audience, and session topics have expanded to include general HIV Health information.

At the one year mark, an evaluation and feedback survey was launched, which provided promising and encouraging results for C-TECH and its partners. The respondents offered favourable feedback on the information sessions and indicated that they were helpful and enabled them to understand better COVID-19 and how it affects PLHIV. For example, respondents commented that the sessions “made me respect myself again”, and the information provided helped them be “more grounded and confident.” The evaluation survey will be one of the tools used by C-TECH as it reviews the strengths and needs for improvement of the health education session.

This initiative is funded and by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) through a grant awarded to the International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH).
